I've read all the reviews on this product and can understand why it's gotten some of the ratings that it did. Many were expecting a step by step instructional DVD, and this isn't what this DVD is.
Having just read Joe McNally's "The Hot Shoe Diaries" and watching this DVD several times, I've got to say there is more to this DVD than meets the eye.
First of all, you get a glimpse of the depth and breadth of what the Nikon Lighting System is capable of, which is much more than most people would think, myself included.
Secondly, you get a glimpse into a variety of lighting set-ups from the simple to the complex. All done with small lights. This isn't something to be taken lightly. This lighting system is very capable, and knowing that should inspire one to pursue those capabilities, granted not from day one.
Right off the bat, I knew from watching this DVD that I could greatly improve my portrait work just using a single flash hand held off camera. What's not to like about that?
I will concur with the frustration and disappointment with many wanting to watch this, and then straight off push this and dial in that, and voila you've mastered your Nikon Flash Units. That isn't going to happen after watching this.
What made this DVD work for me is watching it as part of my current immersion into the world of lighting. Watching it AFTER reading Joe's book greatly added to the value of the DVD.
So, I guess what I'm getting at is this isn't and end-all to what you need to know about lighting, but rather just a piece to solving the lighting puzzle.
Worth a watch or two to whet the lighting whistle.
