This accessory came with the camera body, and it's a necessity in order to keep the LCD display from getting scratched. I don't know if it's designed to protect from blunt force trauma, but I'll say it will to a certain extent, and not against extreme force hits.
It's designed to be very low-profile against the camera body, and that's good, so nothing can get snagged on it and pull it off.
This is a well-made plastic product that will eventually have to be replaced, because it will eventually become scratched or fractured. That's what it was designed to do; protect the LCD display by taking the hits and scratches. Speaking of scratches, you can use clear packing tape over the protector and the LCD screen itself as a first line of defense.
There are cheap imitations out right now, coming from other parts of the world. While certainly cheaper by as much as 50%, I don't think I want to take a chance. I recommend the original BM-8, just like the original batteries from Nikon.
